The Many Worlds of Emily Carr: A Ten-Part Journey Through Her Life, Art, and Legacy

This ten-part presentation series explores the life, art, and legacy of Emily Carr through richly illustrated talks. Discover the influential women and men who shaped her creativity, from family to mentors and friends. Learn how her friendships with Lawren Harris and the Group of Seven inspired her late style. Journey through her childhood in The Book of Small, and her life at the House of All Sorts, full of humour, chaos, and creativity. Follow her transformative painting trips to Haida Gwaii and the Northwest Coast, before and after her 1927 breakthrough. Explore Growing Pains, Carr’s autobiography written just before her death, tracing her artistic training and personal struggles. Finally, experience a virtual bus tour of Emily Carr’s Victoria—James Bay, Fernwood, Fairfield, and Oak Bay—through archival photos, maps, and her own words.

Together, these events offer a deep, engaging portrait of Carr as artist, writer, and pioneering voice in Canadian culture. The presentations are organized thematically rather than chronologically, and each one is designed to stand alone—no prior knowledge or attendance is required— but you might not want to miss any of them.
