Emily Carr Presentation Series | Emily Carr, Victoria & The Book of Small
January 21 I 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm

This engaging and hands-on presentation introduces participants to The Book of Small (1942) by Emily Carr, a beloved Canadian artist and writer. Through a lively exploration of selected selection of thirty-six of Emily Carr’s short stories, participants will discover life in the frontier town of Victoria during the late 19th century, as seen through the eyes of a curious and spirited young girl.
Nicknaming herself “Small,” young Emily is both sensitive and rebellious, often getting into mischief due to her blunt honesty and wide-eyed wonder. With humour and heart, the presentation will highlight how Emily’s vivid storytelling captures both the comedy and sadness of everyday life in Victorian times. Participants will also gain insights into early Canadian history, pioneer society, and the imagination of one of Canada’s most celebrated cultural figures. This session promises to spark curiosity, laughter, and a deeper appreciation for childhood memoirs and Canadian heritage. There will be plenty of time to ask questions during and after the presentation.
